Fire coverage helps newlywed couple
A fire coinciding with the second day of the State Fair might not have gotten much attention, until we learned it destroyed a newlywed couple’s belongings while they were away on their honeymoon. The drama in that scenario is palpable – tantalizing for newshounds looking for a story peg.
It was also rewarding to be told by the family that our coverage helped to build steam for a benefit to assist the couple’s recovery. (more…)
Busy busy bank robbery
After two cousins robbed a bank in Rome Thursday, things were very busy for the remainder of the workweek. I’m particularly proud of the products we produced, and wanted to save a link to all of it.
Covering 2 big stories this week
The news in Syracuse this week has been overwhelmed by two very big, late-breaking stories. First, on Monday, a fatal crash along Route 31. Then, Thursday, a shooting at an AT&T store in Rome. These two stories have consumed much of my time during the last four days, and so I wanted to save links to them here for posterity.
Into this posting I’ve embedded a 9WSYR.com Video Report that I arranged and edited using video content shot by a NewsChannel 9 team sent to cover of the shooting. It tells the story of the moments immediately following the shots through statements by two witnesses. It is a web-only video that scored hundreds of views within hours of being posted.
Due in large part to these two big stories, I’m also proud to say we’ve seen amazing amounts of traffic on 9WSYR.com recently.
Hoptown How To
With his white monogrammed oxford and western-Kentucky accent, Wynn Radford in every way looks the part of the southern businessman. Selling insurance, however, isn’t his only venture. Radford is also a modern day community organizer as sole sponsor and contributor to hopkinsvillehowto.com, a repository for public information.
Radford says his website is not an attempt to save the world, but simply a product of his frustration with a lack of communication between people in his “Hoptown” home. “it is an attempt to level the playing field… A forum to share information,” he says. (more…)
Loose ends, no more (?)
Andrew and I are spending our last day on the Oregon coast trying to gather the last bits of content we will need to complete our stories. Currently we are outside Taft high school waiting for the end of a Safety “code yellow” and drug dog search so that we might go in and finish photography and videography of two of our high school subjects.
Sitting here blogging from our mobile devices and in real time reminds me that I am very much a part of the story we are covering. It is as interesting as it is unorthodox. Journalism usually preaches separation, but this two-faced project requires as much performance as it does reporting. Twittering, blogging, posting our dreams for the future of journalism all the while sheding light on the topic.
NBC Olympics Internship Experience
During August of 2008 Beijing was more than just the largest city in the world, a place where ancient Chinese history was integrated with all of modern China’s tourist traps. Beijing was even more multifaceted than that. It was the central focus of the world, and all the world was there. It became a metaphor for international relations, and a proving ground for modern broadcast technology. This was the true pleasure and intrigue of the Olympic intern experience: Which of those various facets would we encounter next?
My internship experience was, as with all things, imperfect. There was certainly more we desired on the work side. Some other interns got far more exposure to journalists, engineers, and technicians from around the world, or greater access to the Olympic events than I did. Of those things, we in the logger pool were certainly jealous. However, working in the Central Tape division gave us an extra ability to interact with the two facets of modern technology and ancient China than did many other interns. With the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, I can both appreciate the opportunities I had and regret those I missed.
I think I am not alone in feeling as if the Central Tape interns, as a whole, missed many of the interpersonal networking opportunities that runners had. runners were, necessarily, encountering new people quite often. As loggers we were working with a set group of people. A runner’s routine seemed to be anything but routine. Their work would have them completing wide varieties of tasks. A logger’s routine was very repetitive and would differ only between different sports. As a result we got to know limited number of Central Tape peers quite well, and they got to know and trust us through a very limited set of tasks. The loggers, as a group, would often observe that runners had not just more opportunities to network with larger numbers of people, but also an opportunity to show each one of them more about their various talents.
Complaints now being aired, it is possible to talk about the benefits and privileges of my internship – which were many. (more…)

Onondaga Creek Package

[Anchor: 2]
BUT NOW PROGRESS IS AT A STANDSTILL. THE COUNTY’S NEW EXECUTIVE PUT THE ARMORY SQUARE PLANT ON HOLD LAST WEEK, GIVING OPPONENTS TIME TO PUSH THEIR REASONS WHY MORE PLANTS SHOULD *NOT* BE BUILT. AS PHIL TENSER REPORTS, 1 OF THOSE ARGUMENTS IS NEW, WHILE ANOTHER HAS BEEN ON THE TABLE FOR SOME TIME.
