Fire coverage helps newlywed couple
A fire coinciding with the second day of the State Fair might not have gotten much attention, until we learned it destroyed a newlywed couple’s belongings while they were away on their honeymoon. The drama in that scenario is palpable – tantalizing for newshounds looking for a story peg.
It was also rewarding to be told by the family that our coverage helped to build steam for a benefit to assist the couple’s recovery. (more…)
Busy busy bank robbery
After two cousins robbed a bank in Rome Thursday, things were very busy for the remainder of the workweek. I’m particularly proud of the products we produced, and wanted to save a link to all of it.
9WSYR.com wins National Murrow Award
As a Web Producer for NewsChannel 9′s 9WSYR.com, I’m proud to announce that we’ve won the national Edward R. Murrow award for best website in the small market television category. The RTDNA announced the award Wednesday, June 16.
In April, we also won the best website award in the same category of Region 11, which qualified us for national consideration. This is the second time in three years that 9WSYR.com has won the national award in our category.
News21 Honor
I’m honored to report that my News21 fellowship project has been honored with an award in the AEJMC Best of The Web 2010 contest: We were named second place in the Team Journalism category.
While being in second place does not make us eligible for the overall Best of The Web award, it is still a high honor – especially considering the other amazing projects against which we were judged in this contest.
9WSYR.com wins Syracuse Press Club Award
The Syracuse Press Club has announced 9WSYR.com will receive an award in the News Website category of their annual contest. While honored by the Press Club’s announcement, we in NewsChannel 9′s WebUnit do not yet know if we earned first place. That will be announced at the award presentation dinner on May 15. (more…)
9WSYR.com wins Region 11 Murrow award
I’m happy to announce that against some of the largest news organizations in the country, NewsChannel 9, WSYR, won two Edward R. Murrow Awards from the RTDNA. As a web-producer I’m proud to say one of the awards won was for “Best Website.”
From [the award winning] 9WSYR.com:
“NewsChannel 9 is the proud recipient of the regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Website and Overall Excellence from the RTDNA…it’s the fourth time in the last five years that 9wsyr.com has won the Best Website honor, including being honored nationally two years ago.”
Our region, number 11, includes all of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania – meaning we had stiff competition for the award. Winning, therefore, feels even more meaningful.
Now, back to working toward winning next year’s award as well.
Resume Redesign Redux
Once again, I’m stuck in the waiting area at the auto mechanic’s, trying to find out what’s wrong with my car. So, in the meantime, I pulled out the laptop and decided to get back to considering my personal branding. Here is the result of my first hour-and-1/2 worth of work.
I’ve abandoned trying to make a logo based on just my initials, simply because I can’t find a way to fit them together that I like. I didn’t like the computer monitor logo from my previous Resume Redesign.
I’ve also decided against using a design simply because I can’t think of a single design that expresses all I can/want to do. Instead, I’ve opted to use my full name, and to color it in the same scheme as the rest of the page, and eventually the rest of this website.
Resume Redesign
Inspired by some recent designs I’ve found, I have created this proof of a new resume. Note the work in progress of a new logo.
This is continuing my learning process with InDesign and Illustrator, two pieces of software that I feel I’ve not used enough.
Medical Justice
We’ve all heard of doctor-patient confidentiality. The legal and ethical rule by which the doctor cant divulge the private information of you, the patient. In Central New York, one local writer and a number of local doctors are starting to grapple with the question of whether that confidentiality goes both ways. What rights do you have to speak publicly about your doctors, and if you do, what should you choose to talk about?

SCPS Hiring Commercial
Schine Student Centers and Programming Services is a 3 tiered department that runs Syracuse University’s Schine and Goldstein Student Centers and the Skybarn Events Center. This hiring commercial, produced for SCPS’s Employee Advisory Council, is the first recruitment tool requested by that body.
I have also created a training video for the SCPS program, that video is too long for the web and but is available by request.
Political Cartoons
Frank Cammuso of the Post Standard talks to me for NCC News about his work, the candidates, and the types of political satire and how they work.
Democrats go Door to Door
With 17 days remaining before the 2008 elections, the Citizen Action Network of Central New York went door to door about the issue that matters to them: healthcare. The group of Democrats started at the local library with a rally and keynote speech by then-congressional-candidate Dan Maffei. (Maffei was later elected.) After the rally, the group went door to door and found their neighbors open and agreeable to their political points.
These stories were part of team coverage in both the Syracuse University NCC newscast and on the “Newshouse” website. They were balanced by other journalists’ coverage of the republican campaigns.
There are two versions of this story to demonstrate the difference between a standard reporter package that would air on television, and the multimedia version that is better suited to the internet user.
I call the second version a “nat [natural] package.” (more…)
Farm Economy
During the early Spring of 2008, the ground in Central New York had just thawed enough to let farmer Daren Maum, owner of Salvere Farm, begin to till his fields. Salvere Farms is unique among CNY agriculture, because before he plants a single seed, Maum has already sold his entire harvest. It is called consumer supported agriculture, or CSA.
Each season Maum sells shares, or percentages, of his crops that he delivers weekly to his customers at three pickup locations around the area. By staying small and selling directly to the consumers, Maum manages to stand out in another way: he cuts costs of fuel for running the farm and making deliveries. His customers also get away without a grocery store?s markup. All this meant that in Spring 2008, Salvere farm was one of the only farms in the area to not be raising their prices.
Live Interview: Caffeine Addiction
From CONNECT, Spring 2008. This interview compliments a piece by one of our reporters about the addictive nature of caffeine.
A segment no longer part of CONNECT, the live interview was frequently our biggest frustration, but sometimes a surprising success. This interview was one of the latter.
Homecoming Showcase (Soundslides)
This video was produced with a team for a class called ICC 300, or Interactive Communications Core 300. My tasks included audio interviewing and editing, and some photography.
Once each semester the largest club on Syracuse University campus, Danceworks, organizes a showcase. At the final rehearsal for the fall showcase, some teams were still frantically practicing in the hallways outside the auditorium while others confidently showed off to the other performers.
Danceworks uses their fall showcase to recruit new dancers to join for the even larger spring show. The organizers will be the first to tell you, it is all a lot of work.
This slideshow was produced with a group of 3 other students for an Interactive Communications course at the Newhouse school.
