Skydiving at Sunset

Skydiving in Peperell, Massachusetts was an awesome experience that was enhanced by a wonderful sunset that coincided, luckily, with both my jump and my snapping of photos. Falling through the clouds was a fantastic way to celebrate my birthday. It was an unforgettable experience.

On-Call: Hydroplane VO

Last weekend I served as an on-call photographer and was called in during a heavy rain storm. One of the jobs I did during that call was to shoot an accident caused by hydroplaning, which later lead the 11PM newscast as a VO. That video is below.

Slideshow additions

I’ve made some changes to the slideshow that tops my blog page and is featured on the homepage. Some of those photos, taken of me working on the News21 Project, have remained the same, but I’ve also added some of my other favorite photos. For a closer look, here is a gallery of those new additions.

Go SU (and other iPhone cartoon art)

Three photos shot and entirely edited into cartoons using the iPhone aps: PSmobile and Toon Paint. The first is of the SU mascot, the others are of the newsroom where I work.

23rd District Congressional Debate 2009

Today at NewsChannel 9 I had the luck to be working during the 23rd District Congressional Debate – part of the station’s Vote 2009 coverage. Here are some of the photos I took for the 9wsyr.com web unit:

Photos from a scary place

It has been a while since I last posted new material to this site. I have been working around the clock on finishing the News21 fellowship. Now that the fellowship material has been handed over to the web developer for final implementation, I realize that I must continue to bolster my resume and search for a job.

Here are three photos taken as part of my ongoing experiments with photography. They are taken on an iPhone photo app called CameraBag using a setting called “Helga.” I call them, photos from a scarry place: women’s shoe section.

Demolition Derby

Loud, dirty, Americana. Happy 4th of July.

Photos from my News21 trip to Iowa. Taken in the town of Inwood during their independence day celebration.

News21 iPhone photography

Now on my way back from Kentucky for a week of editing in Syracuse, I have looked through my phone and realized that I have gathered many decent photos for twitpics during our travels. Many of these photos include my partner Andrew, much to his chagrin, for obvious reasons. Here are my favorite iPhone photos from the first two News21 trips. I think they are a neat chronicle of all we have done.

Frustrations of Journalism

Edited by Phil for Andrew Burton, News21 partner. Written by Andrew Burton.

blackhawksim1

(Despite my rant below, Phil and I did get to try out the Army’s Blackhawk simulator, used by the 101st Airborne for Training – it’s pretty cool. Surround-view screens, a complete pilot’s cockpit and full hydraulic motion leads to a very real experience. Add in simulated machine gun fire, heat seeking missles, other aircrafts, tanks and foot soldiers and a person gets into it. Our trainer told me I was a great flyer and did an amazing job landing the bird, but that I sucked at dodging heat seeking missles.)

Scouting the Soap Box Derby

I’ve been experimenting with photography and combining different cameras. Here is a quick test combining a Canon EOS 1D Mk II N with a HD Flipcam.

The images were gathered while scouting for locations at the preliminary trials of the Hopkinsville Soap Box Derby to use for asking the News21 national question.

Gone Fishing

Roy Neeble

Roy and Vondah Neeble went out searching for blue cat fish one windy Kentucky day at Land between the Lakes national park. Neither had much luck with their hooks, but they did hook my camera. (more…)

Fort Campbell Simulator

Here is a short video package about the first of my 4 planned tours of Army combat simulators that I will be receiving over the next two weeks as part of the News21 Fellowship. Consider it a sneak peak at a much larger story comparing many of the military’s training technologies to entertainment technology like video games.

Southern Hospitality Extends to the Airwaves

Drew Wilson of WDKZ

Drew Wilson of WKDZ from Phil's Iphone

When we walked into radio station WKDZ in Cadiz, KY (15 miles from Hopkinsville, and right next to our hotel) we thought we would just be dropping off a business card. Instead, this is what happened.

On the Air with Roger Robertson

news21lincolncitymay21-8

Andrew and I were on live radio this morning with Roger Robertson at KBCH talking about how technology is changing teenage lives in Lincoln City. Rather than type more, check out our 1:40 summary video, or if you have the time, listen to the whole broadcast.

Homecoming Showcase (Soundslides)

This video was produced with a team for a class called ICC 300, or Interactive Communications Core 300. My tasks included audio interviewing and editing, and some photography.

Once each semester the largest club on Syracuse University campus, Danceworks, organizes a showcase. At the final rehearsal for the fall showcase, some teams were still frantically practicing in the hallways outside the auditorium while others confidently showed off to the other performers.

Danceworks uses their fall showcase to recruit new dancers to join for the even larger spring show. The organizers will be the first to tell you, it is all a lot of work.

This slideshow was produced with a group of 3 other students for an Interactive Communications course at the Newhouse school.
